Noah, here's what I did and it worked well: I went to my local mail service and paid for 2 courier envelopes. I labeled one with my address and enclosed it along with my 2 money orders (regular processing fee and 9-day service) and my passport in the other courier envelope that was to be sent to the embassy. The embassy will have a pre-paid courier envelope that you have addressed to yourself that they can put your passport in and send it on it's way. I used UPS because it's easy to track at their website, but there are a number of others that have the same service. I hope this is some help to you.
