Gorbachev was too smart to order anything like that. It is true that he did not drink alcoholic drinks like other party leaders ( Yeltsin and the rest) but there were a few people who tried to please Gorbachev and demanded that vineyards should be destroyed.Yegor Likhachev was one of them. In the Crimea there is a famous winery in the village of Massandra and when they were told to stop wine production they contacted Gorbachev personally and he immediately stopped this idiocy.
I believe the same happened in Georgia but it is not Gorbachev to blame but those who tried to make their way up to the top of the Communist Party ladder by all posible means.
: Of course, I forgot about Crimea as a wine producing region. I haven't tried Crimean wine, though, that's a task for my next trip.
: I heard a nasty rumour from a Georgian emigrant friend of mine that the tee-totaller Gorbachev ordered many vineyards to be burned, so that the locals wouldn't drink so much, thereby eradicating many hundreds of years of good vines. Is that true?
: : Vineyards - and yes, they are of the sweet variety.
: : I am partial to Georgian wines - especialy Kimzmaurali and Alazhani - but the Crimean wines are nothing to overlook!
