It is a criminal offense to use any currency in Ukraine except for its currency which is Hryvnia. The present official exchange rate is approximately $1.00 USD for 5.4 Hryvnia. Or, if this is simplier, 18 cents = 1 Hryvnia. The Lvov airport is not too far from the center or the city where the George Hotel is located. A reasonable fare would be about $10.00 or fifty Hryvnia. The number of pieces of luggage makes no difference. Always agree upon the price of the taxi ride before you start. Use an official taxi, not an "independent". No tip is expected. The airport has a currency exchange, however it is not very good. You should only exchange about $25.00 USD at the airport. The George Hotel has a currency exchange on its premises. I was able to cash traveler's checks at it. The hotel will pay the about the same as a bank. Unless you plan to spend a lot of money in Ukraine, the exchange differences at the legal exchange places will not be great. If you have Ukraine friends in Lvov, ask them to exchange currency for you. The unofficial rate is much better and the Ukraine people never use an official exchange. Do not try an unofficial exchange yourself. To do so is a criminal offense.
