Hello Monte,

I do not know your specific intentions regarding making your wife a permanent resident, and eventually citizen, of the U.S. However, I can tell you from my own recent experience dealing with the INS that my Ukrainian wife was issued her Permanent Resident status on a conditional basis for the first two years. During this period, she requires special permission to leave the U.S. (it is called an Advance Parole). After the two years are up, the conditional status will be removed and she can leave the country whenever she desires. I also know that there are limits as to the amount of time spent outside the U.S. to keep the permanent resident status, although I can't recall them off the top of my head.

In your case, I would speculate that you may also have to involve the German government.

I hope that I have not disheartened you, but it sounds as if your situation is a little more complex than most. I would check into things very thoroughly. It would be terrible if you married and then your wife was prohibited from joining you.

Good Luck,
John Blair
