hi I just recently travelled to Donetsk by train and found them to be not onbly safe but also very interesting. If you are travelling alone you are better to share a foour berth cabin (2nd class). this is a great way to meet people and you will find it much more safer then travelling alone or even travelling first class.

If you want and have tinme you can catch the Express train to Poltava or Kharkov (Very modern and comfortable train - Cost around 25 to 30 UAH)spend the night in Hotel Kiev (Poltava) or Hotel Kharkiv either a night train from Poltava or catch a day train to Luganst from kharkiv (Around 5-7 hours).
