I agree; use 2nd class and buy all 4 seats in your cabin. I avoid the toilet floor liquids by wearing shoes and I hover over the toilet seat. The toilets are locked when entering a train station stop. Bring your own food and toilet paper (TP). Carry your own TP in the Ukraine. Even the most luxurious banks have broken ancient toilet fixtures and loose dirty black ink newsprint for wipes. I bring cheese, sausage, bananas and bottled water on the train. I like the cheap good tea with block of sugar sold on the train.
: The trains in Ukraine have 3 'classes'. First class is a cabin with two berths and Second class is a cabin with 4 berths. I've not "experienced" the 3rd class.
: If I am travelling alone, I will purchase all 4 berths in a Second class cabin because I do not have very much Russian and no Ukrainian language abilities. And, I am not too keen in sharing my 'space' with others I cannot speak with, and no absolutely nothing about.
: If you leave the cabin, have the car attendant lock your cabin.
: The toilets are usually not as clean as we might wish for, but, they are 'manageable'.
: I have never experienced any 'unpleasantness' or 'problems' when travelling in Ukraine.
: I hope this helps you. Have a great trip!
