: Dan and Adam, thank you very much for being "concerned citizens of the Board." I appreciate the precedent to start this discussion and hope that everybody will continue to have the right to say anything he/she wants on the free internet. FYI bandwith is only consumed when the message is downloaded. And this is again a commercial argument. So I think this discussion is pointless and

God bless you.

Love, Andriy

: I think Dan is right in promoting an essentially advertising-free board. I found his first post clear and to the point. Hope Paul now understands that it was not an attempt to back-talk individual people, such as Andriy.

: There is a big difference between personal experiences/recommendations (which BTW I think most people on the board are very interested in) and pure advertising from people trying to sell services.

: It is great that there are people in the Ukraine who offer accomodation and assistance at decent prices. But in my opinion there are more apropriate ways to find customers than placing a number of free ads on this board.

:
: : My point was not that Andriy has no redeeming value. I suspect he and his wife are fine people - just as most of the people I've met from Ukraine are terrific people.

: : My point is that all his posts are pure advertisements - and they consume board bandwidth. While I wholeheartedly support his rights to offer services on the board, I (personally) don't approve of *numerous* and frequent posts that NEVER offer any information outside of self-serving advertisements. I simply don't wish for the board to become nothing more than advertisers hawking their products/services.

: : Yes, I make suggestions about alternative services that I was happy with - but I don't receive a nickel (or kopeck) from any proceeds. The same cannot be said for Andriy, I'll bet. Further, I hope I cannot be accused of making recommendations for someone's services that are outside the context of someone's posted question/issue. If I have, it was not my intent to do so.

: : That's all - my post was only my appeal for some sensible moderation of a practice that could become problematic (in my opinion).

: : Others are certainly free to disagree - Andriy included, and if he decides to ignore my appeal - so be it.

: : - Dan

: : : I went to Kiev and stayed in this apartment earlier this month.
: : : What I have noticed on this board is a lot of people with a lot of trepidation, and I had such feelings myself before I left.
: : : It is a little nerve-wracking to throw yourself into the hands of an unknown party, and trust them, particularly after reading some horror stories.
: : : I had a great experience and Andriy and his wife are terrific people and seem to have a great love of Kiev and a wish for others to enjoy it.
: : : I think this is where they are coming from - and this has hardly no redeeming feature, Dan.
: : : Because I am sympathetic to the trepidation others must also feel I offered myself as a recommendation.
: : : Dan, you yourself are a very busy contributor to the board, offering opinions on all and sundry to all comers - even your own recommendations for apartments - and I'm sure you are doing it for the same reasons I am writing this - help and reassurance.

: : : : Andriy,

: : : : I don't want to come across as the 'board police' or something like that - but I couldn't help but notice that you placed an identical advertisement on this message board only 4 days ago.

: : : : My strong suspicion is that anyone who posts messages with no redeeming value or content other than to promote their goods/services - and if they do so to the point that it consumes excessive board bandwidth - will soon draw the attention of the board moderators/owners and they may have to begin to legislate activities on the board. To this point, that has been unnecessary - and I am glad of it.

: : : : My caution then, is to ask that you consider the interests of the main users of the board and restrict your advertising posts to some reasonable number. Not being a 'board policeman' - I don't know what "reasonable" may be, but I think 2 posts within 4 days of one another is pretty frequent.

: : : : Just my opinion and I really am not interested in starting a flame war over it.

: : : : FWIW
