I received a promotional coupon from Northwest Airlines today. In tiny print at the bottom of the page where the coupon is and with an asterik at the beginning of the print, it says, "A direct flight is a trip with multiple stops and a single flight number."
Thus, for Northwest at least, a direct flight is any combination of flights with unlimited stops so long as the flight number never changes. GeeWhiz. I bet 99.9% of all people buying "direct flight" tickets never dream that their direct flight may have not just one, but unlimited stops and even plane changes.
