Interesting you mentioned Stanford. I was just at the emergency room for an extreme stomach ache.

Time in the waiting room (in great pain): 2 hours
Time in hospital bed waiting for painkiller (in great pain): 1 hour
Additional time in hospital bed: 3 hours
Thus total time in hospital (excluding waiting room): 4 hours
Treatment received: temporary painkillers (I think morphine) and blood tests - everything normal.

Cost (remember 4 hours in hospital bed plus some drugs and tests):
Base price for someone without insurance: $4,000 US
Rate because I have medical insurance: $1,900 US (In the US the uninsured people subsidize those with insurance as the insurance companies can force cut-rate prices)
Payment made by my insurance company (and I have what is considered excellent insurance): $1,500
Cash out of my pocket: $400

Conclusion:
For serious problems it may make sense to send people from the US to Ukraine for treatment. Even including airfare it is probably much more cost effective. Also, the nurses are probably better looking there.
