It is unwritten law in many countries that if you stay at your parent's home you should take care of them because they are providing for you something so fundamental as a place where to live.
If you look after yourself and you do not need their help it will be down to what you want to do with them if they need you because at the end of the day if you do not love them , you do not have time or simply you do not want them to live in your house there is not much point on doing otherwise.
But that happen also in spain , families always try to look after each other and support each other because at the end of the day we all need help at some stage of our life and it is good to know that someone care about us.
But I understand that as an american that concept will be difficult for you to understand , for me as an spanish it is as simple as having breakfast every morning
