Train is no easier - don't be fooled. At least if you're a foreigner - american woman. I crossed from Hungary and will never forget the experience. They took my passport, separated me from my friend, tried to extort money, and kept me in room with a couple of armed soldiers stinking from alcohol. They only let me go because my connecting train was leaving. Scared the life from me. Worst travel experience I have ever had. I came back with a driver over the border and had no problem. I'm heading back in May but planning on flying into Ukraine.
