On Saturday April 13, 2013 Bowery Arts +Science and Yara Arts Group present Kateryna Babkina, a poet from Kyiv reading from her new book "Mustard." Enjoy the poetry read by Kateryna in Ukrainian and in English translation by Yara Arts Group. The reading will be on Saturday afternoon 1:30- 2:30 PM at the Bowery Poetry Club, 308 Bowery (at 1St Street) in New York City. Admission is $5 (+ drink). For more information www.brama.com/yara
Kateryna Babkina is a poet, journalist and video artist. Her books of poetry include: "St. Elmo's Fire," (2002) and "Mustard" (2012). Her collection of short stories "Leloo After You" was published in 2008. Kateryna studied journalism at Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State University, and works as a freelance journalist. Recently, her work has appeared in Le Monde and Focus magazine. Kateryna is the co-author of numerous anthologies and almanacs. Her poems have been translated and published in journals in Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Germany and Sweden. In 2006 Kateryna co-founded the Videopoetry/Videoprose Project. Videos based on Ukrainian and European poetry directed by Kateryna were screened in Poland, Lithuania, Russia, Spain and Ukraine.
Yara actors first worked with Kateryna when they performed her poem "Sandman's Monolog" at the "Re-Imagine: Ourselves" festival in January of 2012. In September Kateryna took part in Yara's presentation "Transforming Ukrainian Poetry into Theatre" at the Lviv Publishing Forum and in Kyiv at the "Ye" Bookstore at a special presentation for the Fulbright Program. Kateryna co-curated the "Video Poetry" event at this year's KinofestNYC with Yara's Artistic Director Virlana Tkacz, who together with Wanda Phipps has created a number of English translations of Kateryna Babkina's poetry.
