UKRAINIAN TRANSLATIONS

Virlana Tkacz and Wanda Phipps have been translating Ukrainian poetry into English since 1989. Contemporary Ukrainian poetry in the original and in translations by Tkacz and Phipps has been integral to the original theatre pieces created by Yara. Virlana and Wanda were awarded the Poetry Translation Prize given by Agni and Boston University for their translation of Natalka Bilotserkivets' "May." They also received the National Theatre Translation Fund Award for their work on Lesia Ukrainka's verse drama The Forest Song, and are the recipients of seven New York State Council on the Arts translation grants. In 2005 Virlana Tkacz received the Poetry Translation Fellowship from the National Endownment for the Arts.
