Fourth Congress of the International
Ukrainian Economic Association
The Fourth Congress of the International Ukrainian Economic Association
took place on May 26-28, 1998, at the Institute of Economics, Kyiv, Ukraine.
Previous Congresses had convened in Kyiv (1992), Odessa (1994), and Kharkiv
(1996). About 60 scholars/economists participated, among them a handful
from abroad. About 50 papers were presented which will be published in
the forthcoming proceedings. As can be expected, the presentations dealt
for the most part with evaluation of the quality of economic reforms and
their implementation in Ukraine. Many papers sparked lively discussion
from the floor.
One noteworthy development this year was the marked improvement in the
scholarly level of presented papers. Many speakers were better acquainted
with the literature, particularly with economic theory, and were able to
handle statistical material more effectively than was the case during the
previous congresses. The effects of improvement in economic education in
Ukraine and closer professional contact with Western scholarship was evident.
The next Congress is slated for the year 2000, in Lviv. For more detailed
information as it becomes available, please follow our website. The following
Executive Board was elected for the next two years:
